The Talented Mikha Angelo

Singer Mikha Angelo Brahmantyo is a rising talent of the country’s music scene. The 17-year-old not only sings and writes songs, but also plays the guitar, piano, bass and ukulele, a small guitar-shaped instrument.

Actually when he was an elementary school, he want to be a soccer player but his mother enrolled him at the Istana Nada music school in South Jakarta to learn the piano. After learning the piano, Mikha interest to learn guitar and he asked his older brother to teach him.

“I realized that playing guitar was simple,” said Mikha. And it makes he changed his dream to be a musician.

Mikha later formed a folk-pop band with his older brothers, Reuben as guitarist and Made Emanuelle Brahmantyo, 20, as bassist. By that time he had the confidence to sing with the band on stage. They naming their band “ The Overtune”.

Mikha continued his studies at the School of Sound Recording (SSR) in Central Park, Jakarta.
He participated in a talent show X-Factor Indonesia because many of his friends signed up. After passing the first three rounds, he met with doubt and wanted to leave the competition because he did not want to be known as a soloist but his mother asked him to stay.

He praised God because during the show he was mentored by internationally acclaimed singer Anggun C. Sasmi. “I learnt many things from her. She taught me vocal techniques and singing improvisations. She was very nice. She was like my sister,” he said. 

After X Factor ended, Mikha told record label Sony Music Entertainment Indonesia he wanted to develop his music career with his brothers instead of as a soloist. He was very happy as his band had finally released its first album, along with the single “Dunia Bersamamu”  in February this year after releasing debut single “Sayap Pelindungmu” in 2013.

He said he had no secret about giving a good performance, but he always followed the advice given to him by his first music teacher, Evi Hutapea, when he was four. “She told me to just enjoy music every time I play it.”

Remission for Corruption Convicts

A government plan to ease a remission regulation for corruption convicts as a way of protecting the members of the ruling Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI-P) from legal charges, the party having suffered more corruption convictions than any other over the past decade. 

Alvon Kurnia Palma from the Foundation of the Indonesian Legal Aid Institute (YLBHI) and also the attorney for former KPK deputy leader Bambang Widjajanto revealed that PDI-P politicians had been involved in the most graft cases between 2004 and 2014. The party has 157 cases in a decade, with Golkar Party members in second place with 113 cases and the Democratic Party third with 47 cases. The data is provided by several anticorruption organizations, including the KPK, Indonesia Corruption Watch (ICW) and Transparency International Indonesia. He added that we must suspect that the political agenda is stronger than the legal one behind the plan.

Separated from Alvon, Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna H. Laoly argued that a graft convict had a right to remission and against the KPK’s authority to recommend sentence cuts but Abraham Todo Napitupulu from the Institute for Criminal Justice Reform (ICJR) advised Yasonna to drop the plan and instead conduct a comprehensive study on the impact of the regulation.

Yasonna said that the plan was aimed at improving the legal system and it has nothing to do with the PDI-P. He merely want to fix the system. And he had reported to President Joko Widodo about his idea to revise the 2012 regulation, telling the President that the idea had been widely misunderstood.

He also said that he want to impose stricter requirements. For example, in corruption cases may get remission only if they show good behavior for a year or a year and a half and he also suggested that graft convicts could get a maximum remission of 15 days.

Malnourished Causing the Orang Rimba’s Illness

News Four children from a nomadic group known as the Orang Rimba have received medical treatment in Batanghari regency Jambi. But these four are only a few of the many Orang Rimba that are in need of food, water and medicine.

Mangku terap, the tribe’s chief said that Cipak (one-year-old) and Merute (12 years old) from a tribal group led by Mangku Terap, who live in Bukit Dua Belas National Park (TNBD) have been treated to a pediatric ward’s isolation room in the state-owned hospital in Muarabulian city, Batanghari since Saturday. And two other children, Besikap, 4, and Sebilau, 3, have been treated as outpatients.

Mangku said that before they admitted to the hospital, they had been suffering from fever for seven days, and the group tried to help the kids, but they did not show any improvement of their health, and thats why the group bring them to the hospital. He adding that Actually there are seven more children who have been suffering same disease but they were yet to be able to take them to the hospital.

Beby Andihara, one of the doctors at the hospital said that the kids were suffering from fever, cough, acute respiratory infections which is caused by malnutrition and bad sanitation. He adding that being nomadic had weakened their immunity and vulnerable to diseases. If the kids did not improve next day, they would be referred in to a hospital in Jambi city, the provincial capital and the Batanghari regency would recover the administration.  

The Warsi Indonesian Conservation Community (KKI Warsi) unit coordinator Kristiawan said that eleven Orang Rimba in TNBD had died over the past two months. Most were members of the Temenggung Marituha group.

Different with Kristiawan, the Jambi provincial Social Manpower and Transmigration Agency’s Suku Anak Dalam section head Usup said his office had started investigating the deaths of the Orang Rimba caused by starvation. Both of Kristawan and Usup hope that government would proactively provide health and food aid, most importantly, medical treatments to the ill children.

KKI Warsi reported that the tribe are bound by their strong tradition because the damage of the forest forcing them to buy fish from outside the forest where they are not allowed to eat meat except that which they hunt. So it makes the tribe had been malnourished.

Temenggung Nyenong who led 35 families of Orang Rimba hope that the government will pay attention to them and call for a stop to forest destruction.

The execution of 10 convicts on Nusakambangan prison island in Cilacap, Central Java, will most likely be postponed, with the relevant officials leaving the regency.

Officials from the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) and the National Police reportedly checked out of their hotels on Friday.

“That’s right, they checked out on Friday. Most of them were police officers,” said a receptionist of the Wijaya Kusuma Hotel, who asked for anonymity, on Saturday. She said that as of Thursday, her hotel had been fully occupied by mostly police personnel.

Earlier, almost all hotels in Cilacap, especially those located in downtown Cilacap, had enjoyed full occupancy rates, as two high-profile convicts, Australians Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan of the so-called Bali Nine drug trafficking gang, were escorted to Nusakambangan for execution.

A member of staff at Sindoro Hotel said the hotel had been fully booked a week before the Bali Nine duo had arrived in Nusakambangan. They were booked for a week’s stay, starting from March 3.

Yet, on Saturday, the staff said, many of the hotel’s rooms were already vacant.
Meanwhile, Ursa Supit, the lawyer of Nigerian death-row inmate Raheem Agbaje Salami, who has been in Cilacap for three days, confirmed the departures. 

“There are no more prosecutors in Nusakambangan. They’ve all returned to Jakarta,” Ursa said.  

He said the government had to reconsider postponing the executions, as many of the death-row convicts scheduled to be executed were still undergoing the legal process. 

“My client Raheem, for example, had to attend a trial at the Jakarta State Administrative Court on Monday, for the rejection of our judicial review proposal,” Ursa said.

 

As of Saturday, security measures at the prison island’s Wijaya Kusuma Dock appeared less tight than before. No police officers were seen guarding the dock and only the prison’s security officers were seen checking on visitors. 

On Friday, AGO spokesman Tony Spontana said the executions would unlikely be conducted soon, although nine of the death-row convicts, including Sukumaran and Chan, had arrived in Nusakambangan.

Earlier, many speculated that the executions would be conducted this weekend based on the January executions of six drug traffickers who spent three days on the prison island before facing the firing squad.

Meanwhile, the Brazilian Embassy in Indonesia was reportedly still awaiting a reply from the AGO regarding its request to send Brazilian death-row inmate Rodrigo Gularte to a mental hospital for treatment, as the Cilacap regency-owned RSUD Hospital had declared him mentally ill.

“We have sent the official letter to the AGO but have not yet received a response,” Brazilian Deputy Ambassador to Indonesia Leonardo Monteiro said in Jakarta on Saturday as quoted by Antara news agency.

Previously, Attorney General M. Prasetyo said that according to the law on the death penalty, mental illness was not a reason for the postponement of an execution.

“No regulation says so. Exceptions apply only to pregnant women and those under the age of 18. For others, there are no exceptions. Gularte did not have a mental illness when he committed the crime,”Prasetyo said.
